CHAPTER SIX

THE SUN WAS high in the sky when Jay eventually woke. It had been a late night after all. Later still when he’d lain awake into the early hours, going over the events at the party in his mind. Not only on a high after saving that woman’s life with Meadow, but also because of the sparks between them which were dangerous so close to a body of water.

Even though they’d been out in the open, he’d been freezing cold and wet and the circumstances anything but sexy, those few seconds of Meadow staring at his partially naked body had been the most erotic thing he’d experienced in a long time.

He didn’t know what would have happened if Greg hadn’t walked in on them, probably nothing since there was a houseful of people still there. However, the interruption had managed to bring them both back down to earth. So much so they’d barely spoken on the journey back. Meadow hadn’t even taken the opportunity to tease him about the neon board shorts and cerise vest top Greg had provided him with in place of the wet clothes he’d carried home in a bag.

They’d said their goodbyes and gone their separate ways as soon as they’d pulled up on her father’s property. It was clear she regretted whatever had gone on in her mind as he’d performed his impromptu strip tease, but he hadn’t missed that flare of desire she’d briefly allowed to burn before it had been extinguished. In those few seconds he’d got to see a more uninhibited Meadow, a woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to show it. Then those barriers had popped up again, stealing that light from her eyes, and making sure he redressed in double quick time, the intimate moment obviously over.

Then he’d tossed and turned until dawn, wondering if he’d wanted things to go further and not liking the answer. Yes. He’d been tortured by the thought of going over and knocking on her door to see if she wanted to carry on where they’d left off. Then he realised if she had, she would’ve come to him. Meadow was a woman who knew her own mind, knew what she wanted, and what she didn’t. There had obviously been something, other than Greg’s untimely arrival, which had caused her to rethink her interest in him as more than a colleague.

He should be relieved her aversion to spontaneity had saved him from betraying Sharyn’s memory. Yet it had been that ‘what if?’ fantasy which had kept him from sleep, not guilt. Since Sharyn’s death he hadn’t thought about being with another woman, the grief too raw to let him form any sort of emotional attachment to anyone else. He hadn’t even wanted a purely physical hook-up because it would’ve been empty, meaningless, and would have made his mood sink lower, disgusted with himself for doing it.

Sharyn would have wanted him to meet someone else. She would never have expected him to lock himself away from the world again.
